Since I am often asked
about the arrangements on my albums,
I would like to give you an idea here,
of what happens when recording my CDs,
and why there are no
arrangements of my music
published.
First of all, I get the
basic original version of the song -
which can be from a
lead sheet style chart, or the
original sheet music, or often I transcribe
them by ear from the primary
recording. Then I may make changes to
it regarding the form, the chords and
I also add introductions, endings,
extra sections. I do this by hand,
directly on the music. Of course for
more complex arrangements such
as big band and small and large
ensemble music, I create a whole
separate arranged score with
parts. In the
studio, I may make changes to the
tempo, mood, style and also to
the melody itself by adding flourishes
and improvisations.
After editing, mixing and
mastering, the final result is what you hear on
the CD. In the end, there is no
sheet music detailing
every note you hear, as such. It's more of an
organic process I go through, sort of
adding my touch to these songs,
however the inspiration strikes me.
Sometimes it deviates more from the
original music, sometimes it differs
less.
It would be possible to write
out the final results as sheet
music, but it's not something I
do after the fact, it is a
lot of work, there are also copyright
issues that may arise, and all
in all it is not something that
is viable for
me.
I hope this gives you a little
insight into the process, and
allows you a better
understanding of the
circumstances.
